Non-freezing cold injury is one of the most common yet overlooked injuries affecting UK service personnel. Between 2010 and 2022 alone, over 4,925 members of the British Armed Forces were diagnosed with this condition, with thousands more reporting ongoing symptoms that impact daily life. In some cases, the effects are so widespread that military studies have described them as an ongoing issue within the British Army, particularly during prolonged training in cold, wet environments.
